Hello my friend!
Welcome, I am so glad you joined me.
How does the fact that your life and mine are masterpieces and that we are destined for good, jive with being human? First a quote.
“Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human.” Captain Kirk from Spock’s eulogy.
Ok, the quote may not apply to this topic but it is one of my favorite Star Trek movie quotes of all time. I’ll keep going.
Starting last Sunday in a sermon, and then popping up all week I have seen repeated over and over a variation of “You are only human.” or “Accept that you are human.” Now it has me thinking…
In some ways, being human fits perfectly with “be yourself, be real, be alive”. (Last week I covered some of this here in a post about self-leading.) My main take-a-way from things I’ve seen this week is that being human means to accept and love myself knowing that I will not always get it right. Then, when I do get it wrong, extend a large amount of grace to myself. The simple summary.
I won’t always get it right.
I am loveable and can love myself anyway.
Give myself forgiveness and grace when I get it wrong.
"To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance." - Oscar Wilde
This quote encapsulates the transformative power of self-love and compassion, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of nurturing our inner selves for a fulfilling life.
"Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to ourselves that we would give to others." - Christopher Germer
This quote succinctly captures the essence of humanness and its importance in personal well-being.
We are masterpieces and we will not always get it right.
Circling back to my first question. Can we be masterpieces and do good and at the same time be human? The answer is yes and yes we are complex. Finally, could being comfortable and at peace with the tension, we are masterpieces and we will not always get it right, propel us to even greater humanness? What do you think?
Stay real and be alive.
Kevin
